Sciatica Treatment Winthrop
Sciatica can be a very painful problem! At Winthrop Chiropractic, we have many years of experience of helping people with this problem.
Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica results from irritation or entrapment of the nerve roots in the lumbar spine that make up the sciatic nerve. While there are a number of causes, most commonly sciatica is a result of a misalignment (subluxation) of the lumbar vertebra.
A subluxation is a joint in the lumbar spine or pelvis which is not moving or sitting correctly. This problem will cause the nerve to be compressed, irritated or inflamed.
Occasionally the nerve damage is a result of a disc herniation in the low back. The disc is a soft shock absorber between the bones of the spine. This material can bulge, squeeze or extrude so that it is touching on the nerve roots.
A further cause of sciatica includes severe osteo-arthritis which narrows the holes through which the delicate nerves of the spine must travel as they leave the spine.
At Winthrop Chiropractic, we trained to identify the exact cause of your sciatic pain. Call the clinic on 9332 0122 to make an appointment.
Symptoms of Sciatica
The most common symptom of sciatica is pain! Sciatica pain starts as a dull ache in the low back and the leg and may progress to become a sharp shooting pain. The pain radiates from the low back, down the outside of the leg to the foot and in severe cases even extends into the foot.
When the sciatic nerve is severely damaged a person may end up with an area of numbness in the leg and low back pain.
Damage to the sciatic nerve may result in other symptoms. These include:
- A loss of strength in the leg
- Numbness in the low back or leg
- Bowel and bladder changes
At Winthrop Chiropractic we always perform a thorough orthopaedic and neurological examination to identify all of the impacts that nerve damage may be having on your body.
The Impact of Sciatica
Sciatic pain can penetrate every aspect of life! Everyday life becomes a chore- even simple tasks such as getting out of bed, coughing, sneezing or even using the bathroom can become a painful experience.
The emotional effects can be devastating as pain restricts our ability to truly enjoy life. Bed rest and inactivity is often the only thing that gives relief, though temporary.
Who Is At Risk Of Sciatica
Sciatica rarely is the result from one event, accident or injury. The spinal damage that causes sciatica is often an accumulation of a lifetime of neglect and improper care of the lumbar spine. With this in mind, it is essential for proper care and maintenance of the lumbar spine to prevent Sciatica from ever taking place.
It is crucial that you have an assessment of your spine immediately if you suspect you have sciatica. Ignoring this problem may lead to permanent damage that requires more dangerous medical treatment such as surgery.

Sciatica Treatment at Winthrop Chiropractic
It is important that you contact your Chiropractor when the sciatic pain originally begins.
The first thing your Chiropractor will do is review your complete health history to determine when the problem began and the possible causes. Then a complete physical and chiropractic exam is performed and x-rays may be taken. Your Chiropractor will review and discuss the results with you and make recommendations for care.
The Chiropractic approach does not cover up the symptoms associated with Sciatica, but actually finds and takes care of the underlying causes. If nerve supply is diminished at all it must be restored so the body can repair and function optimally. Along with proper chiropractic adjustments, a program of rehabilitation is prescribed to maximise soft tissue healing and to build strength and stability to the area to prevent future injuries.
